About Shannon Cay

As a visual journalist and documentary filmmaker in Springfield, Missouri, I'm driven by the belief that every story has the power to create change. Through my lens at the Springfield Daily Citizen and as President of Carbon Trace Productions, I work to capture the moments that shape our community and amplify the voices that often go unheard.

My Approach

My storytelling philosophy is rooted in authenticity and impact. Whether I'm documenting a local celebration, investigating a pressing social issue, or mentoring emerging storytellers, I approach each project with the same dedication: to leave it better than I found it. This commitment extends beyond the camera – it's about building genuine connections and fostering understanding within our community.

Professional Journey

My path in visual storytelling began at Missouri State University, where I earned my Bachelor's in Broadcast Journalism. After honing my skills as News Director at Earl's Family Broadcasting, I took on the role of Executive Director at Carbon Trace Productions in 2018, where I now serve as President. At Carbon Trace, I've led the organization in creating impactful documentaries focused on critical social issues, from homelessness in Springfield to migrant experiences at the U.S.-Mexico border. This leadership role has allowed me to combine my passion for storytelling with nonprofit management, overseeing operations, financial management, and strategic planning for the 501(c)(3) organization.

Since 2021, I've also been bringing my visual storytelling expertise to the Springfield Daily Citizen, working with an amazing team of journalists dedicated to Springfield and Greene County coverage. Throughout my career, I've continued to evolve my craft, obtaining additional certifications in web development and grant writing to better serve our community's needs.

Community Engagement

My work extends beyond journalism into active community leadership. From serving on Hollister's Park Board to mentoring student journalists and filmmakers, I believe in the importance of giving back. Whether it's helping create a kayak park, funding summer camps for underprivileged children, or volunteering at polling stations, I'm committed to building a stronger, more connected community.

Current Focus

Today, my work focuses on documenting the stories that matter most to our community – the people in it. Through visual journalism, I strive to create visuals that inform and inspire action and understanding.

I'm always eager to collaborate on projects that make a difference in our community. Let's connect and explore how we can tell stories that matter.
